About Alpha Investment ManagementAlpha was founded in 1997 by Dr. Arthur J. Minton. Dr. Minton had previously served as a partner in an institutional investment consulting firm headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. In his capacity as a consultant, he came to the conclusion that the vast majority of money managers were merely duplicating the popular stock market indexes and added little in the way of value to the investment process. During the late 1990s, he became convinced that the U.S. market was about to enter a long period of sub-par returns, and that long-term investors would welcome a new methodology which would protect assets through extended periods of high volatility. At the same time, new index funds were being created which were designed specifically to be used by active institutional investors. These funds allowed investors to trade as often as they wished with no transaction fees. Dr. Minton realized that this development in the mutual fund industry allowed money managers to use techniques which were known to be effective in risk-management, but impractical because the costs of trading were prohibitive. Starting from the research of Norman Fosback (Market Logic, 1976), Dr. Minton and Michael Burk (Alpha's director of research) created the Alpha seasonal trading system, a low-risk method of capturing the most statistically reliable bullish periods in the market. Each year, as Alpha's research uncovers nuances which add value, the trading system is enhanced and optimized. Alpha is constantly seeking new ways to increase our clients' long-term performance. |
